S&P 500 and Nasdaq rise as oil prices retreat ahead of Federal Reserve decision

Wall Street opened mixed on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite advancing as easing oil prices supported technology stocks, while investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision and a busy period of corporate earnings.

The S&P 500 rose 0.30% to 7,699.47 shortly after the opening bell, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45% to 26,286.31.

However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 84 points, or 0.16%, to 52,277.49, highlighting the uneven performance across major US equity benchmarks.

Brent crude declined 1.6% to $113.91 a barrel, providing some relief to investors concerned about the inflationary impact of elevated energy prices.

The decline followed renewed diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East, with representatives from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan meeting Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday.

The discussions focused on reducing the risk of further regional escalation and establishing channels for continued dialogue.

Although no formal agreement was announced, the diplomatic activity provided some encouragement to financial markets following recent volatility in oil prices.

Technology shares helped support the Nasdaq, with semiconductor giant Nvidia rising 0.75% to $217.62, while Intel advanced 3.13% to $93.30.

The gains reflected continued investor interest in semiconductor companies, although broader market sentiment remained cautious ahead of upcoming earnings announcements.

Among financial and payment technology companies, Visa declined 0.76% to $401.08, while PayPal edged 0.63% higher to $55.34.

The mixed performance demonstrated the selective nature of early trading, with investors responding to individual company prospects rather than moving uniformly across sectors.

The Federal Reserve’s two-day monetary policy meeting remains a central focus for investors, with markets awaiting the latest decision on US interest rates and any guidance on the future direction of monetary policy.

Persistently elevated energy prices have complicated the inflation outlook, raising questions about how long borrowing costs may need to remain restrictive.

Investors will be particularly attentive to comments from Federal Reserve officials regarding inflation, economic growth and the potential for further interest rate adjustments.

Bitcoin traded around $80,168, reflecting continued volatility in cryptocurrency markets as traders assessed the outlook for US monetary policy and investor risk appetite.

Meanwhile, major corporate earnings announcements are expected to provide further insight into business investment, consumer demand and the strength of the US economy.

The early gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq suggest that easing oil prices are providing some support for investor confidence, although weakness in the Dow Jones indicates that sentiment remains divided.

Attention will now turn to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement, developments in Middle East diplomacy and forthcoming corporate earnings, which could determine whether Wall Street’s early advances can be sustained.
