Numerous flood alerts persist, leading to travel disruptions for commuters on Friday due to extensive rainfall that has inundated roads, fields, and railway lines.
As of Friday morning, England is under 302 flood warnings, while Wales has 13, with predictions indicating the possibility of more showers.
Rail services are experiencing significant disruptions. Great Western Railway has announced closures on several routes due to the floods, including the lines between Swindon and Bristol Parkway, Reading and Castle Cary, and between Liskeard and Looe in Cornwall.
Thameslink services are also facing issues due to a landslip at Arlesey in Bedfordshire.
In East London, firefighters evacuated approximately 50 individuals overnight after a canal overflowed in Hackney Wick, leading to flooding over an area of about 10 acres.
The highest recorded rainfall on Thursday reached 35.2mm at Otterbourne in Hampshire, with many southern counties of England experiencing 20-30mm.
The Environment Agency warns of continued flood-related challenges in many parts of England for the next five days.
Environment Agency – More than 1,000 properties flooded
The Environment Agency reports that over 1,000 properties in England have experienced flooding this week, and the numbers are expected to rise.
Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire became isolated due to floodwaters on Thursday, while the Trent in Nottinghamshire witnessed its highest river levels in 24 years.
Floods also affected parts of Worcestershire, and in London, homes were inundated after a canal overflowed in Hackney Wick.
Caroline Douglass, the Environment Agency’s director of floods, commented on BBC Breakfast, “We’ve seen extensive rainfall.”
“Following Storms Babet and Ciaran in November and December, the ground was already heavily saturated throughout the country, especially in the east.
“This was further exacerbated by rainfall in the lead-up to Christmas. The recent rainfall has compounded the situation, leaving no room for the water to be absorbed.
“With the ground fully saturated, we are witnessing more severe flooding and impacts, often in areas where such events are not common.”
