Sovereign Metals identifies $722m rare earth opportunity at Kasiya as project value reaches $2.9bn

Sovereign Metals Limited (ASX: SVM; AIM: SVML; OTCQX: SVMLF) has outlined a potential US$722 million increase in the pre-tax net present value of its Kasiya Critical Minerals Project in Malawi, following a scoping study examining the recovery of rare earth elements alongside the project’s existing natural rutile and graphite production plans.

The study represents an important development for Kasiya, potentially transforming the project into a producer of three strategically important mineral products without requiring additional mining or front-end processing.

The proposed rare earth recovery circuit could produce 2,626 tonnes of monazite concentrate annually, containing an estimated 1,485 tonnes of total rare earth oxides at steady-state production.

This includes around 310 tonnes of neodymium-praseodymium oxides and 36 tonnes of dysprosium-terbium oxides, which are essential components in high-performance permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, robotics, wind turbines and advanced defence technologies.

Annual production would also include approximately 193 tonnes of yttrium oxide and 82 tonnes of samarium and gadolinium oxides, further strengthening Kasiya’s potential importance to Western critical minerals supply chains.

The base-case scoping study estimates an incremental pre-tax net present value of US$722 million, based on additional capital expenditure of approximately US$29 million.

The proposed rare earth operation delivers a modelled pre-tax internal rate of return of 151% and a payback period of 1.5 years, reflecting the potential benefits of recovering valuable minerals from material already included in Kasiya’s existing processing flowsheet.

Under an alternative Western Supply Case, the incremental pre-tax NPV increases to US$883 million, with an internal rate of return of 172%.

Including the proposed rare earth production stream, Kasiya’s integrated pre-tax net present value is estimated at approximately US$2.9 billion.

The figures are preliminary economic estimates rather than current asset valuations or guaranteed financial returns, with the additional rare earth circuit requiring further technical assessment and commercial development.

Annual steady-state EBITDA from rare earth production is estimated at approximately US$84 million, with annual pre-tax free cash flow of around US$82 million.

Over the proposed 23-year rare earth production period, the study forecasts approximately US$1.8 billion in cumulative incremental pre-tax, unlevered free cash flow.

Sovereign estimates incremental site operating costs of approximately US$0.90 per kilogram of rare earth concentrate, supporting a modelled operating margin of around 90% under its base-case assumptions.

The company believes the low-cost profile is possible because monazite would be recovered as a by-product from existing mineral streams using additional gravity separation and flotation equipment.

The rare earth circuit would leave Kasiya’s principal development plan unchanged, including its initial 25-year mine life and planned processing capacity of 24 million tonnes annually.

The project’s existing production targets remain 222,000 tonnes of natural rutile and 275,000 tonnes of natural flake graphite per year.

Sovereign has also completed a maiden monazite Mineral Resource Estimate of 524.4 million tonnes grading 0.0132% monazite, with approximately 74% classified in the Indicated category.

The resource is contained within the existing definitive feasibility study pit shells, meaning the proposed rare earth recovery operation would not require additional mining to access the identified mineralisation.

The company believes this provides a capital-efficient opportunity to expand Kasiya’s product range, potentially improving project economics while limiting additional development complexity.

Even under a downside scenario based on US government-supported rare earth floor prices, the study estimates an incremental pre-tax NPV of US$183 million and an internal rate of return of 43%.

However, these results remain sensitive to commodity pricing, processing performance, operating costs and the assumptions underpinning the scoping study.

Sovereign is increasingly positioning Kasiya as a potential strategic supplier to the United States and allied economies, offering natural rutile, graphite and rare earth materials from a single mining operation.

The company is seeking to strengthen relationships with US government agencies, development finance institutions and export credit providers as Western countries work to diversify critical mineral supply chains.

Commercial discussions with Mitsui & Co and Traxys North America are also progressing, with Sovereign aiming to advance existing rutile and graphite offtake memoranda towards binding agreements.

The proposed rare earth concentrate provides an additional opportunity to engage with specialist processors and potential customers seeking alternative supplies of magnet-related materials.

Sovereign continues to work with the International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank Group, on the development financing strategy for Kasiya.

During the December quarter and into 2027, the company intends to advance metallurgical variability testing, produce rare earth concentrate samples for customer evaluation and progress marketing and offtake discussions.

A pre-feasibility study incorporating rare earth recovery into Kasiya’s development plans is targeted for completion during 2027, providing a more detailed assessment of processing requirements, costs and potential economic returns.

Further work will also examine whether additional monazite resources can be identified beyond the existing 25-year mine plan.

Alongside these activities, Sovereign will continue environmental and social assessment work, financing discussions and community development programmes in Malawi.

The company ended the September quarter with A$20.7 million in cash and cash equivalents, following exploration and evaluation expenditure of approximately A$3.1 million during the period.

For investors, the scoping study highlights the potential to generate additional value from Kasiya’s existing mineral streams, with comparatively modest incremental capital expenditure and exposure to strategically important rare earth elements.

Nevertheless, the proposed recovery circuit remains at an early technical and economic assessment stage. The estimated returns depend on successful metallurgical testing, customer qualification, financing and integration into the wider project.

Attention will now turn to the 2027 rare earth pre-feasibility study, customer qualification of monazite concentrate and progress towards binding offtake and financing agreements, as Sovereign Metals works to develop Kasiya into a major supplier of critical minerals for Western industrial and energy markets.
