Russian gas flow via Yamal-Europe pipeline reversed on 6th day

According to data from Gascade, the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which usually delivers Russian gas to Western Europe, was sending the fuel back home to Poland for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday.

Data showed that flows from the Mallnow metering station on the German-Polish border were flowing eastward into Poland at an hourly rate of almost 1.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh/h) Sunday. These levels are expected to remain at this level throughout the day.

WIGA is the joint venture between Gazprom, Wintershall DEA and Oil and Gas Company Wintershall DEA. Gascade is owned and managed by WIGA. Wintershall DEA shares its ownership with Russian chemicals company LetterOne and German chemicals group BASF.

Russia said this week that the flow reversal wasn’t a political move. However, it coincides with increasing tensions between Moscow & the West over Ukraine. This has led to record gas prices.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Germany was selling Russian gas to Ukraine and Poland rather than relieving an overheated market. He blamed German gas importers for the reversal and the rocketing prices.

According to data from Eustream, the capacity nominations for Sunday’s Russian gas flows via Ukraine to Slovakia via Velke Kapusany border point were 739,826-megawatt hours (MWh), slightly lower than Saturday’s 747,031MWh, and much lower than recent weeks.
