How Russia is losing its energy advantage

Ukraine’s expanding drone campaign against Russian energy infrastructure is emerging as a major pressure point in the war, with strikes increasingly targeting refineries, fuel terminals and vessels linked to Russian supply routes.

The attacks have reportedly reached deep into Russian territory, including major refining sites far from the front line, raising questions over the security of Moscow’s energy infrastructure and its ability to sustain fuel supplies.

Ukrainian drone units are said to have targeted tankers, refineries and coastal terminals across the Black Sea region, increasing pressure on Russia’s export revenues and domestic fuel system.

Analysts argue that Ukraine’s strategy is designed not only to disrupt military logistics but also to weaken the economic base that supports Russia’s war effort.

The pressure on Russia’s refining network is particularly significant because damage to complex refinery units can take months to repair, especially where replacement components are difficult to source under sanctions.

Reports suggest Russia has imposed restrictions on refined fuel exports and is seeking additional supplies from countries including Kazakhstan and India.

The disruption has helped tighten global fuel markets, with diesel and other refined product margins remaining elevated even as crude oil prices have not fully reflected the same level of stress.

Ukraine’s campaign is also feeding into broader concerns over Russia’s fiscal position. Oil and gas revenues are under pressure, while the Kremlin continues to face rising military costs, subsidies and war-related compensation payments.

At the same time, Russia is reported to be struggling with recruitment, battlefield losses and the prospect of further mobilisation, which could carry significant domestic political risk.

The combined pressure from energy disruption, battlefield attrition and economic strain has raised the possibility that the balance of the war may be shifting.

However, the situation remains volatile. Russia has previously responded to pressure with escalation, and any widening of the conflict could create fresh risks for Europe and global energy markets.

For Ukraine and its European allies, the latest developments may represent an opportunity. But the outcome will depend on whether Kyiv can sustain the drone campaign, whether Russia can adapt its defences, and whether Western support remains firm.
