According to the Bundesnetzagentur energy regulator, Germany will likely miss the November target for gas storage levels. This was to avoid an energy crisis.
Germany is currently in the second stage of a three-stage emergency strategy to reduce dependence on Russian gas. This plan was created in response to the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia has dramatically reduced flows to Europe via Nord Stream 1 since June and currently supplies only 20% of the agreed volumes. This is attributed to technical problems. Europe claims the move was politically motivated.
It already met its first goal for gas storage facilities to be 75% full in September. The next goals are storage levels of 85% and 95% respectively by Oct. 1, and Nov. 1.

Klaus Mueller, head at the Bundesnetzagentur, stated that he doesn’t think we will reach the next storage targets as fast as the first.
Mueller stated that achieving the target of 85% is not impossible but extremely ambitious, especially if heating is being used by October 1.
“In all our scenarios we will miss an average filling rate of 95% starting Nov. 1. He said that individual storage systems, which started at a very low level, will make it difficult for us to achieve this goal.
Mueller stated that Germans should conserve gas because they could face problems in the future for a few years.
He said that it wasn’t just one winter. It’s about at most two winters and the next winter could prove even more difficult.
