Anglo American (LON:AAL) announces major restructuring to streamline its portfolio and reduce expenses.

Following the rejection of a second acquisition proposal from BHP, Anglo American PLC (LSE: AAL) has announced a significant restructuring of its portfolio and strategy.

The FTSE 100 company plans to divest its steelmaking coal business due to strong market interest, demerge De Beers and Anglo American Platinum in a controlled and orderly manner and explore options for either maintaining or divesting its nickel operations.

The company intends to maintain “optionality” at the Woodsmith fertiliser mine in North Yorkshire, although it will reduce investment levels.

CEO Duncan Wanblad commented, “We foresee a radically simpler business model delivering sustainable incremental value through significant improvements in operational performance and cost efficiency.”

Wanblad also noted that shareholders would “experience the full, undiluted benefits from these comprehensive changes,” with an emphasis on enhancing the value of its copper and iron ore assets while minimizing any associated transitional costs.

Although many of the proposed changes align with suggestions previously made by BHP, Wanblad emphasized that by managing these changes internally, the company could ensure respectful and considerate treatment of its employees, host communities, and countries. This approach is particularly aimed at maintaining Anglo American’s role as a responsible business leader in South Africa, supporting the nation’s key priorities.

The review, prompted by BHP’s offers, aimed to identify the optimal strategies for maximizing shareholder returns. The newly structured business will focus over 50% on copper and other commodities essential for the energy transition and food security, targeting an improvement in EBITDA margin from 31% to 46% and maintaining a 40% dividend payout ratio.
