Wall Street set for mixed open after tech sell-off

US stock futures pointed towards a mixed opening on Friday, 6 November, with technology shares showing signs of recovery following Thursday’s sharp Wall Street sell-off, which wiped trillions of dollars from US equity valuations.

Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 1.1%, suggesting that technology stocks could rebound when trading begins in New York at 9.30 am Eastern Time, or 2.30 pm GMT.

Meanwhile, S&P 500 e-mini futures gained 0.2%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures declined 0.8%, highlighting continued uncertainty across the wider market.

The contrasting movements follow a turbulent session on Thursday, when the Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.5%, the S&P 500 fell 4.4% and the Dow Jones dropped 3.4%.

Semiconductor and artificial intelligence companies experienced particularly heavy selling as investors reassessed high valuations and concerns surrounding the future pace of data centre investment.

The Nasdaq 100’s anticipated recovery follows substantial losses among major technology companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Alphabet, as questions persist over the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending.

The positive movement in technology futures contrasts with continued weakness in the Dow, suggesting investors remain selective following Thursday’s broad-based decline.

Concerns about potential regulatory scrutiny of artificial intelligence companies following the Democratic midterm election victories continue to influence sentiment, particularly around data centre construction, energy consumption and infrastructure costs.

However, the latest indications suggest some of the immediate selling pressure on technology shares may be easing.

Wall Street’s opening performance will provide an important indication of whether investors are prepared to return to AI-related stocks following one of the market’s sharpest sell-offs in recent months.
