Wall Street Opens Lower as $100-Plus Oil Keeps Inflation Fears Elevated

Wall Street opened lower on Thursday, with persistently high oil prices weighing on investor sentiment and adding to concerns over inflation and interest rates.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were both down around 0.4% in early trading, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6%.

The weakness follows Wednesday’s declines, when rising government bond yields already put pressure on equity valuations.

Oil prices remaining above $100 a barrel add another complication for markets by increasing energy and transport costs while potentially keeping inflation elevated.

For investors, the key risk is the combination of higher oil and higher bond yields. If both remain elevated, markets face continued pressure from higher corporate financing costs, weaker consumer spending power and lower valuation multiples, with technology and other long-duration growth stocks particularly exposed.

The closing market implication is that this is increasingly becoming a macro valuation reset rather than a sector-specific pullback. If oil stays above $100 and Treasury yields remain elevated into the close, weakness could broaden beyond technology into consumer, property and other rate-sensitive shares, while energy producers remain one of the few areas with a clear earnings tailwind.

Investor takeaway: US equities are extending their decline as oil above $100 reinforces inflation concerns and the risk that interest rates remain higher for longer. That combination is particularly challenging for technology and other high-valuation growth shares, explaining the Nasdaq’s heavier early fall.
