The FTSE 100 drifted lower on Friday as the blue-chip index closed down 29 points at 9,187, with UK banks leading the declines with more than £8bn wiped off the UK banking sector’s value. NatWest was the FTSE 100’s biggest faller, tumbling 4.85%, while Lloyds Banking Group dropped 3.3% and Barclays slipped 2.2%.
Retailers also came under pressure, with JD Sports losing 4% and Kingfisher down 2.2%. HSBC shed 1%. The sharp moves reflect growing investor unease over the prospect of a windfall tax on major banks being unveiled in Reeves’s first budget this autumn.
