UK drivers are paying the highest diesel prices in Europe, according to a new analysis by the RAC.
The average price of diesel at UK forecourts is 155p per litre, which is more than 5p higher than in Ireland and Belgium, and around 7p more than in Italy.
This comes despite the government’s 2022 effort to reduce pump prices by cutting fuel duty by 5p per litre.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams stated, “The average price of a litre of diesel should be around 145p if retailers were charging fairer prices.
The margin on petrol is also, in our view, unreasonably high at 13p. We see no good reason why retailers in Britain aren’t cutting their prices at the pumps.”
The UK competition watchdog has been investigating the fuel market and found evidence of profiteering last year. In March, the Competition & Markets Authority expressed concerns about the rising profit margins at petrol stations.
