Asian shares were mostly up as markets brace for the US Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut in over four years.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose by 0.8% to 36,482.21 in morning trading, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 remained largely unchanged at 8,139.30.

South Korea’s Kospi added 0.1% to 8,139.30, and the Shanghai Composite index increased nearly 0.2% to 2,709.06. Trading was closed in Hong Kong due to a national holiday.

On Tuesday night, Wall Street ended nearly flat after reaching record highs earlier in the day. The S&P 500 hit an all-time high but settled only 0.03% higher at 5,634.58 in afternoon trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.04% to 41,606.18. In contrast, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed 0.2% higher at 17,628.06.

In the bond market, the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes rose to 3.64%, up from 3.62% late on Monday.
