What happened overnight – Thursday 8th August 2024

Asian shares showed mixed results following declines on Wall Street, as recent market volatility continued to unsettle investors.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 closed down 1% at 34,727.86, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.4% to 7,673.10. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 0.7% to 2,551.36.

In contrast, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.8% to 17,018.62, and the Shanghai Composite gained 0.3% to 2,877.28.

Taiwan’s Taiex fell 1.9%, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. losing 2.5%, mirroring losses in the tech sector on Wall Street and elsewhere. Other semiconductor equipment makers also experienced declines, with Advantest dropping 3.2% and Disco sinking 4%.

However, Lasertec’s stock surged 22.6% after reporting a 28% increase in net profit for the fiscal year ending June 30.

On Wall Street, stocks ended lower on Wednesday as a brief rally fizzled amid persistent unease following recent market turbulence.

The S&P 500 fell 40.53 points to 5,199.50, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 234.21 points to 38,763.45, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 171.05 points to 16,195.81.
