What happened overnight – 10th April 2024

On Wall Street, there was a slight increase in the S&P 500, which went up by 0.1% to reach 5,209.91, following a previous day of minimal change.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a marginal decline of less than 0.1%, falling to 38,883.67, while the Nasdaq Composite saw a rise of 0.3%, closing at 16,306.64.

In the bond market, Treasury yields decreased ahead of the upcoming update on U.S. consumer-level inflation scheduled for Wednesday. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury bonds dropped to 4.35%, down from 4.42% on Monday.

Hong Kong’s stock market started Wednesday on a positive note, with the Hang Seng Index gaining 0.58%, or 97.95 points, to reach 16,926.02.

The Shanghai Composite Index experienced a slight decrease of 0.08%, or 2.58 points, ending at 3,045.96. Similarly, the Shenzhen Composite Index on China’s second exchange fell by 0.23%, or 3.97 points, to 1,746.83.

In Tokyo, the stock market opened lower as investors adopted a cautious approach in anticipation of the U.S. inflation data release.

The Nikkei 225 index declined by 0.34%, losing 133.84 points to settle at 39,639.29, while the broader Topix index dropped 0.31%, or 8.61 points, to 2,746.08.
