Wall Street tech shares rally despite European market losses

US technology stocks rebounded strongly at the opening bell on Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining more than 1% as investors returned to growth shares following last week’s sharp sell-off, contrasting with continued weakness across European stock markets.

The Nasdaq surged 276 points in early trading, recovering some losses from a volatile period for artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related companies.

The broader S&P 500 climbed 0.55%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged lower, highlighting the stronger performance of technology shares compared with more traditional industrial businesses.

The recovery follows a difficult week for US equities, during which concerns over the sustainability of artificial intelligence investment, rising infrastructure costs and elevated technology valuations triggered substantial selling pressure.

Investors appear to be taking advantage of lower technology share prices, although the early rebound does not necessarily indicate that concerns surrounding AI financing and future profitability have been resolved.

The contrasting performances between Wall Street and European markets also highlight differences in sector exposure, with US benchmarks benefiting more directly from gains among major technology companies.

Market attention will remain focused on whether the Nasdaq can sustain its recovery, particularly as investors prepare for upcoming technology company earnings and further signals about the outlook for US interest rates.

Despite the positive opening, uncertainty surrounding inflation, monetary policy and the scale of future artificial intelligence investment continues to influence global equity sentiment.
