# UK’s National Grid says back-up coal plants stood down for Monday

The National Grid of Britain has cancelled plans to start coal plants Monday night. It had previously asked operators to prepare for high demand on [Sunday.](https://www.share-talk.com/national-grid-puts-coal-plants-on-standby-due-to-cold-snap/)

As Britain’s energy supply is being squeezed by the cold, the National Grid will request that households cut their power consumption.

As part of its “demand flexibility” service, the nation’s power operator will pay customers not to use energy in the future.

Today’s first outside test of the scheme saw households receive a payment to lower their electricity consumption between 5 pm-6 pm.

This initiative is designed to prevent blackouts.

National Grid cancelled plans to start coal plants tonight. It had requested operators to prepare on Sunday in case of high demand for electricity.

A grid spokesperson stated that the grid’s supply picture has improved since the notice was issued.
