On Friday, Britain issued a warning to its citizens, urging them to exercise caution while travelling to Denmark due to the potential for attacks.
This warning follows recent Quran burnings by anti-Islam activists in Denmark and Sweden, which have sparked outrage among Muslims.
Previously, both the British and U.S. governments have issued warnings about potential attacks in neighbouring Sweden. In response to the perceived threat, Sweden elevated its terrorism alert to the second highest level on Thursday.
The British Foreign Ministry updated its travel advice, stating, “Terrorists are likely to attempt attacks in Denmark. These attacks could be indiscriminate and may occur in locations where foreigners are commonly found.” The advisory also noted that Danish authorities have successfully disrupted several planned attacks and have made multiple arrests.
Sweden has likewise reported that it has prevented attacks in the wake of Quran burnings and other actions against Islam’s holy text, which have outraged Muslims and elicited threats from jihadists.
Earlier on Friday, the Swedish government announced that it had bolstered security at its embassies and other international missions due to an uptick in threats directed towards Swedish interests abroad.
Both the Danish and Swedish governments have denounced the Quran burnings and are contemplating changes to their laws that could prevent such acts in the future.
However, domestic critics argue that these legislative adjustments must uphold the freedom of speech that is enshrined in both countries’ constitutions.
