Global stock markets have shed $4.9 trillion (£3.8 trillion) in value since Donald Trump’s “liberation day” speech on Wednesday, according to a stockbroker’s analysis.

Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, commented: “China’s response to Trump’s latest round of tariffs shows neither side is backing down. It’s been a grim week for financial markets, with share prices taking another hit.

Since the day of liberation, $4.9 trillion has been wiped from the global stock market.

“The tariff escalation is a significant blow to U.S. companies that rely on Chinese imports—and the reverse is also true—as rising costs squeeze both sides. More broadly, it reignites the kind of geopolitical tension between the U.S. and China that defined much of Trump’s first term.

“In just a few days, stock markets have seen sharp declines, damaging investments across the board—even for Americans who were supposed to benefit from Trump’s policies. Instead, his approach has triggered shockwaves around the world.

“There’s been little to cheer about since liberation day. This weekend, business leaders will be left scratching their heads, trying to navigate an increasingly complicated landscape.”

**“Magnificent Seven”**

U.S. tech stocks continue to plunge, with some of the biggest names on Wall Street leading the decline.

All members of the so-called “Magnificent Seven” have fallen sharply today: Apple is down 5.3%, Tesla has dropped 10%, Microsoft is off 2.4%, Amazon has slipped 2.5%, Nvidia has tumbled 7.9%, Meta is down 4.6%, and Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has fallen 1.5%.

PC makers, which rely heavily on Chinese manufacturing, are also under pressure—Dell is down 6.9%, while HP has dropped 5%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq index is currently down 4.7%, with the broader S&P 500 sliding 4.5%.

**The Dow has plunged over 1,700 points **

The outlook for major index funds has taken a sharp turn for the worse. The Dow has plunged over 1,700 points today, while both the S&P 500 and the tech-focused Nasdaq are down 5% so far. This comes on the heels of a steep selloff yesterday, when stocks dropped as much as 6%, and the downward momentum shows no sign of slowing.

Markets were further rattled by comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who warned earlier today that the new tariffs are likely to fuel higher inflation—sending investors deeper into panic mode.

Not long ago, Wall Street was buoyed by expectations that the Fed would continue cutting interest rates this year. Now, those hopes appear to have all but vanished.
