This afternoon, Donald Trump escalated trade tensions by threatening even higher tariffs on China.
He warned that “if China does not withdraw its 34% increase on top of their long-standing trade abuses by tomorrow… the United States will impose additional tariffs of 50% on China, effective April 9.”
Posting on his Truth Social network, Donald Trump issued a stark warning to China following its latest round of retaliatory tariffs:
“Yesterday, China announced retaliatory tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record-setting tariffs, non-monetary trade barriers, illegal subsidies to domestic companies, and long-standing currency manipulation,” Trump wrote.
He reiterated that any nation responding to the U.S. with additional tariffs would face swift and significantly higher tariffs in return.
“If China does not roll back its 34% hike—piled on top of years of trade abuse—by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose additional tariffs of 50%, effective April 9th.”
Trump also declared that all ongoing discussions with China would be halted: “All talks regarding China’s requested meetings will be terminated. Negotiations with other countries that have sought discussions with us will begin immediately.”
He concluded: “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
