Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that the United States is engaged in active discussions with China over tariffs, despite Beijing’s official denials.
Responding to questions from reporters about who is participating in the discussions, the former U.S. president said: “They had a meeting this morning, so I can’t tell you — it doesn’t matter who they is. We may reveal it later. But they had meetings this morning and we have been meeting with China.”
His remarks follow a firm statement from the Chinese government asserting that no negotiations have taken place. Earlier in the day, Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson He Yadong dismissed Trump’s assertion that the two countries are speaking “every day” on trade issues, calling such claims “groundless and without factual basis.”
“As the competent department for foreign economic and trade relations, I would like to emphasise that there are currently no economic and trade negotiations between China and the United States,” He said.
When pressed on the contradiction between the two accounts, Trump responded: “I think you have your reporting wrong.”
The conflicting statements underscore ongoing tensions and confusion surrounding the status of U.S.-China trade relations.
