St Brides Partners Weekly Brief, Saturday 29th January 2021

Another week has passed and what a week it has been. The market took a slide, bitcoin fell off the ol’ high horse, tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to rage, a Canadian airline turned around mid-flight because a passenger refused to wear a mask (imagine being that lady!) and a beloved icon left us.

However, the upside is that the world is indeed slowly opening back up to us. Wales has moved to covid alert level zero. The Philippines will be opening its borders to vaccinated tourists and we found a new species of insect in Uganda – a rare find, according to scientists. Although it has been a worrisome and frightening time for many people, it might seem that our weary planet needed a break from our constant footfall and is now slowly coming back to life.

In other news, FTSE is down 1.26% after a tumultuous week with Barclays and HSBC the unfortunate culprits. However, UK stocks are looking positive as the gains for energy corporations increase as the worrying tensions in Europe spark supply concerns. The LSE blue-chip index fell 1.2% yesterday and is set to finish the week on a low. However, it is on its second month of gains. There is hope that these indices change direction in February.
