Our neighbours across the pond in North America celebrated their national holiday of Thanksgiving. It is a day to spend with family and loved ones to reflect upon what you are thankful for this year – but, more importantly, it marks the beginning of Black Friday the day after.
Although we do not celebrate Thanksgiving over here, we most certainly are thankful that we can partake in the sale event of the year without the need to cook a full turkey. Barclays has already reported a 21.4% increase in payments between midnight and 9 am compared to 2020 whilst Nationwide has seen a 24% increase in purchases. This is set to be a record Black Friday period for the UK with PwC estimating £8.7 billion to be spent over the weekend, almost double as last years due to you-know-what. Even though we do not get involved in the festivities, there is plenty to be thankful for this year – particularly, getting our Christmas shopping done early and nabbing up a bargain or two!
The FTSE has fallen to a two-month on Friday, low amid the fears of the new Covid-19 variant and the implications it may have for both businesses and Christmas if we enter another lockdown, with one expert describing it as “the worst one we’ve seen so far”. Thankfully, it hasn’t reached British soil so far, and the quick action of red listing the affected countries may, hopefully, prevent another Christmas lockdown.
