St Brides Partners Weekly Brief, Saturday 17th July 2021

Although it didn’t come home last weekend and instead went to Rome, the England team were all still winners in our country’s eyes.

Getting us to the furthest stage in a tournament in 55 years is no small feat and to be within a hair’s width of the trophy is an achievement that did not go unnoticed nor uncelebrated. Aside from the sport itself, it brought us a much welcome distraction: to book out the local pubs screening the matches, to have your family and friends over to watch the game together, to proudly put up flags and to draw a red cross on every surface you can find; it gave us a renewed sense of unity by bringing the country together in celebration, something that has been missed during these tough times.

Despite those that continue to try to create divides, it has been eclipsed by people’s retaliation in the face of hatred and ignorance after an outpour of support for Rashford, Saka and Sancho following Sunday, particularly on Marcus Rashford’s mural in Manchester which is no longer vandalized but overwhelmed with positive messages. Whilst this appalling display of racist attacks have no place, the teammates assure that the positive far outweighed the negative and refuse to be phased by abuse – Saka put it quite simply: ‘Love always wins’.
