**Gold prices push past $2,000/oz as ETF outflows subside on lower Treasury yields**

- Gold prices hit a three-week high on Tuesday at $2,008/oz, supported by a dollar moving to 2.5-month lows.

- US Treasury yields weakened yesterday on expectations of a slowdown in global and US growth and employment.

- The 10-year yield has moved to 4.4% from October’s highs of 4.99%, providing a tailwind to assets hit by higher rates.

- Gold resumed its inverse correlation to Treasury, following a diversion as the war premium weakened on improved negotiations in the Middle East.

- Home sales are falling to 13-year lows in the US, supporting bets the Fed will cut rates earlier than expected.

- There is now a 60% chance the Fed will cut rates in May, as priced by the market.

- Physically backed ETF outflows have subsided, with a ramp up in purchases as yields move lower expected to support gold’s rally.

- Hedge funds are ramping up bullish bets on gold prices.

**Copper rallies as stronger Renminbi supports Chinese imports**

- Copper prices pushed higher to $8,400/t, its best day since mid-July.

- The move followed a weakening of the dollar against the Renminbi, supporting the buying capacity of Chinese smelters.

- This reversal of dollar strength is showing up in the Yangshan premium, paid by Chinese buyers for refined copper products.

- The premium hit its highest in 2023, climbing to $102.5/t.

- Analysts suggest renewables demand in China is supporting the inventory depletion.

- However, LME and COMEX future curves are both in Contango, pointing to ample physical supply and weak demand.

- LME stockpiles hit their highest in two years, vs Shanghai stocks weakening to 2009 lows.

**Iron ore holds $130/t as Thyssenkrupp writes down steel unit**

- Iron ore is holding its nine-month high, touching $133/t in Singapore.

- China’s NDRC is trying to lower prices, holding meetings with the Dalian Commodity Exchange and key market players.

- The move is interesting given November is a seasonally weak demand period,.

- Beijing is reportedly supporting the bedraggled construction sector with $137bn of stimulus.

- Thyrssenkrupp has written down its steel unit by an additional $1.96bn on low steel prices and high energy costs.

- The division was subject to a write down earlier this year of €350m.

**China resumes exports of Gallium and Germanium following Xi’s visit to San Francisco**

- Beijing will resume exports of small amounts of germanium and gallium after a two-month ban.

- The move comes as graphite export controls come into force on December 1st.

- Germanium and gallium are used in chip making.

**121 Conference (London)**

- Well done to the 121 team for organising their largest conference for mining companies and investors this week.

- London continues to provide a base for many international investors looking for opportunities in the mining space as seen at the conference.

- Larger mining companies are increasingly active looking for new exploration and development opportunities.

- Investors are offering a broader range of finance through new and innovative products to compliment traditional equity.

- Offtake, royalties, and a variety of debt structures are increasingly on offer, making the decision-making process for finance increasingly complex for companies.

- We surmise, there is no lack of cash, it is just on offer in differing forms.

- We look forward to seeing everyone at the 121 in Cape Town on 5-6 February.

**Economics**

**US – October meeting FOMC meeting minutes showed that policymakers agreed to “proceed carefully” on future interest rate decisions contingent on incoming economic data.**

- The meeting was held before a report on inflation released mid this month showing that inflation slowed more than expected leading to a rally in sovereign debt and equity markets.

- Markets reported muted reaction to minutes with yields on 10 year debt up 1bp to around 4.42% and S&P 500 Index down 0.25% on the day.

**UK – Chancellor is expected to announce a £9bn permanent tax break for business during the Autumn Statement this morning.**

- The proposed scheme that was due to expire in 2026 will extended permanently allowing companies to deduct all of its spending on IT, plant and machinery from taxable profits.

- Preliminary estimates by the OBR in March said the temporary version of the £9bn/year expensing policy would increase business investment by as much as 3% per year during its initial thee year period., FT reports.

- Additionally, Jeremy Hunt is due to provide for cuts to national insurance.

**Israel/Hamas – Israel and Hamas agree a temporary seize fire and the release of 50 civilian hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.**

- A ceasefire will last four days.

**Argentina – Election of Javier Milei will be interesting. He has previously threatened to blow up the central bank and has pledged to adopt the US dollar as the country’s functional currency.**

- Moving to the US dollar works till there are no more dollars in the local cash machines and the banks are not able to restock.

- Fortunately for Argentina, many residents hold overseas US dollar bank accounts.

**Crypto – Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to anti money laundering and US sanctions violations under a settlement with authorities that would allow the cryptocurrency exchange to continue operating.**

- Binance will pay $4.3bn in one of the largest corporate agreements in the US history, Bloomberg writes.

- Zhao is expected to get no more than 18 months in prison under a plea deal.

**EV & Battery News**

**China to become largest auto exporter in 2023**

- China is almost certain to become the world’s largest automobile exporter this year, as its auto exports in the first 10 months hit 3.92m units.

- *“In 2001, the export value of China’s automobile industry chain was only $1.56bn, taking up a global share of just 0.65%. In the first eight months of this year, this figure neared $122bn, accounting for 5.5% of the global total,” *according to the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

**Li Auto’s first EV reaches 10,000 preorders in under 2 hours**

- The Li Mega is Chinese automaker Li Auto’s first EV.

- The EV was announced at the Guangzhou Auto Show and the company announced that it had received 10,000 preorders within 1 hour 42 minutes of the launch.

- The Li Mega will use CATL’s 5C Qilin battery:

102.7kWh capacity

- 700km range

- 170Wh/kg energy density

- 15.9kWh/100km

- 500km of range can be charged in 12 minutes.

**Stellantis and CATL plan EU battery factory for cheaper EV batteries**

- The automaker is looking to build its fourth battery plant with the battery giant, and its first in Europe as it seeks to make EVs more affordable.

- Stellantis and CATL announced the preliminary agreement for the supply of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and modules for the automaker’s EV production in Europe.

- Europe’s carmakers and governments are pouring billions of euros into building battery plants to reduce their dependency on Asia. At the same time, Chinese battery makers like CATL are building plants in Europe for European-made EVs.

**Volkswagen begins operations at wholly owned battery pack plant in China**

- VW has begun operating its first wholly owned battery pack production plant in China, in eastern Anhui province’s capital, Hefei, according to local government sources.

- Volkswagen Anhui will also begin mass-production of pure electric models based on the MEB platform by the end of 2023, the sources said.

- The German automaker invested around $210m into the plant.

**Chinese automaker’s Nio and Changan Auto to develop battery swap EVs**

- Nio will partner with Changan Automobile to develop battery swapping EVs, in an attempt to ease costs.

- The partnership will also see Nio and state-owned Changan building and sharing battery-swapping stations and standardising batteries. (Reuters)

- Battery swap EVs allow drivers to replace depleted packs quickly with fully charged packs, rather than using a charging point.

- Battery swapping could help to ease the strain on power grids at peak times when drivers recharge, but it would only become feasible if batteries become more standardised.

- Nio have been leading the way globally with its battery swap technology and plan to double the number of swap station in China this year.
