UK stocks rebounded alongside Wall Street as investors bought the dip in tech shares. The FTSE 100 closed the week 0.6% higher, up 60 points to 10,370, while the FTSE 250 gained 0.5% to 23,208. More than £18bn was wiped off the market value of London-listed software and data firms over the past week amid fears that AI could disrupt the sector.
Nearly $240bn has been wiped off Amazon’s value as investors grow uneasy over the eye-watering sums being poured into AI. The e-commerce giant’s shares plunged 10% at the open after it unveiled a $200bn (£148bn) spending surge on AI infrastructure. Bitcoin, which plunged 16% on Thursday in its biggest one-day drop on record, has since risen 3%. Gold and silver also bounced back as traders moved into commodities during the tech pull-back.
