Share Talk Weekly Stock Market News Review, Sunday 26th January 2025

The blue-chip FTSE 100 slipped by 0.7%, yet it remained on track to achieve its fifth consecutive week of gains. This week saw the benchmark reach an all-time high, buoyed by a global stock surge prompted by indications that US President Donald Trump might adopt a more conciliatory approach to tariffs on China.

The British pound rose to a two-week peak against the US dollar today. The dollar was adversely affected by the absence of definitive tariff policies during Trump’s initial week in office, which impacted the shares of international firms like Shell and HSBC. This increase was driven by copper prices reaching their highest level in over two months, fueled by optimism over a potential US-China trade agreement. Meanwhile, the FTSE 250 mid-cap index finished the day relatively unchanged.
