Russia’s government has removed the temporary ban on most gasoline exports.

Russia’s government announced on Saturday that it had lifted the temporary ban on most gasoline exports supplied by producers while extending restrictions for other exporters, including independent traders and resellers, until January 31, 2025.

The initial export ban was scheduled to expire this year’s end. Exceptions to the ban include supplies to the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union, comprising several former Soviet states and countries like Mongolia, which have intergovernmental fuel supply agreements with Russia.

“The decision was made to ensure stability in the domestic fuel market, support the oil refining sector, and combat illegal gasoline exports,” the statement reads. In 2023, Russia produced 43.9 million metric tons of gasoline, exporting approximately 5.76 million tons, equivalent to about 13% of its total production.

The primary importers of Russian gasoline are predominantly African nations, including Nigeria, Libya, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.
