Rouble Falls to Three-Month Low Following Ukraine Attack

The rouble fell to its lowest level since late May after Kyiv launched its largest incursion into Russian territory since the war began in 2022.

The rouble weakened by 1.9% on the day to 90.30 against the dollar, according to LSEG data, losing 6p over five consecutive sessions since the start of the attack.

Russia evacuated civilians from parts of a second region near Ukraine after Kyiv intensified military activity near the border.

Ukrainian forces breached the Russian border last Tuesday, sweeping through parts of Russia’s Kursk region in a surprise attack possibly aimed at gaining leverage in potential ceasefire talks after the US election in November.

Kyiv broke its silence on the attacks on Saturday when President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine had launched the incursion into Russian territory to “restore justice” and pressure Moscow’s forces.
