Petrol prices hit two-week high as oil market volatility continues

UK fuel prices have started rising again following last week’s sharp surge in oil markets, which briefly pushed crude prices to their highest level in four years.

According to the RAC, the average price of unleaded petrol increased by 0.1p on Thursday to 157.56p per litre, the highest level since 20 April.

Petrol prices are now around 24.7p per litre higher than they were before the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, reflecting the impact of recent geopolitical tensions on global energy markets.

Brent crude climbed above $126 a barrel last week — its highest level since 2022 — before retreating to around $98 amid growing optimism over a potential US-Iran peace agreement.

Meanwhile, diesel prices edged slightly lower, with the average price falling to 188.07p per litre. However, diesel remains significantly elevated, standing 45.7p above levels seen at the end of February.
