Backed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the project also featured prominently in a new UK-Germany agreement on critical raw materials, underlining its geopolitical relevance.\n\nAt its core, the plant uses Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) technology—developed at the University of Birmingham—to recycle neodymium-iron-boron magnets, a key component in electric vehicles and wind turbines.\n\nFrom an operational standpoint, the numbers are modest today but scalable:\n\n- Initial capacity: 100 tonnes per year\n\n- Medium-term target: 350 tonnes\n\n- Fully permitted capacity: up to 750 tonnes annually\n\nThat ramp-up profile is important. It gives Mkango a phased growth pathway without requiring immediate heavy capital deployment.\n\nWhat matters more, though, is positioning. Europe has been trying to reduce reliance on imported rare earths—particularly from China—and projects like this are central to that strategy. Recycling, in particular, offers a lower-cost and lower-carbon alternative to primary mining.\n\nCommissioning is already underway, with early runs of the core processing unit completed. If execution continues smoothly, the plant could become a meaningful contributor to Europe’s domestic supply chain over the next few years.\n\nIn short: still early-stage in terms of output, but strategically significant—and very much aligned with where capital and policy support are heading."}
