Some UK banks have experienced online banking issues on payday for the second consecutive month.
Many workers’ salaries are deposited into their accounts on the last working day of the month.
Experts have cautioned that online banking systems often struggle to cope with the transaction surge as wages are paid and bills are processed simultaneously.
Nationwide and First Direct have confirmed disruptions to online banking services and are actively working on resolutions. Nationwide acknowledged on its website that “some incoming and outgoing payments are delayed,” though all other services remain operational.
The bank reassured customers that direct debits and standing orders continue functioning as usual, with delayed payments queued for processing. Similarly, First Direct reported issues affecting its mobile and online banking platforms, specifically with payments.
Nationwide Alerts Customers to Payment Delays
Nationwide’s service status page informs customers that “some incoming and outgoing payments are delayed at the moment.”
The bank provided the following updates:
- Some payments to and from accounts are currently delayed.
- If you have sent or are expecting a payment, no action is needed—transactions are queued and will be processed as soon as possible.
- New payments can still be made, but they will not go through immediately.
- Direct debits and standing orders remain unaffected.
Despite the delays, customers can still:
- Transfer money between accounts.
- Use their cards for online and in-store purchases.
- Access online banking and the mobile app.
- Withdraw cash from ATMs.
Meanwhile, an uptick in complaints has been noted from Lloyds and Halifax customers, according to Downdetector.
