London’s transport operator has asked commuters not to travel on Monday due to a 24-hour strike that is likely to cause widespread disruption to underground train services.
Transport for London (TfL), stated that although some trains will run on Monday, the majority of stations are expected to close and operate at reduced hours. The disruption would continue into Tuesday morning.
Normal service is expected for buses and overground trains, although they may be busier than normal.
In order to reduce running costs and ensure financial sustainability, the transport operator proposed that no more than 500 jobs be filled when they become vacant.
RMT Transport Union wants London’s Mayor to increase taxes in order to finance the city’s transport network. It also stated that a threat to its pensions remains.
Andy Lord, Chief Operating Officer of TfL, said that he would like to apologize to London for the consequences of this strike. “We are aware that it will be detrimental to London and to the economy at a time when public transportation is playing an important role in the capital’s recovery.”
