Iran Weighs Closure of Strait of Hormuz, Raising Oil Market Tensions

Iran is seriously considering closing the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters, citing comments from Esmail Kosari, a member of the Iranian parliament’s security commission.

The Strait—strategically located between Oman and Iran—is the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoint, with nearly 20% of global oil shipments passing through its narrow waters.

This is not the first time Tehran has threatened to shut the passage in response to Western political or economic pressure. However, the renewed rhetoric adds fresh urgency to a long-standing geopolitical flashpoint.

Any disruption to traffic through the Strait would likely send shockwaves through global energy markets, with analysts warning of an immediate spike in oil prices and potential knock-on effects across supply chains.

Musk Hints Starlink Is Active in Iran: “The Beams Are On”

Elon Musk has signalled that Starlink internet may now be active in Iran, reigniting speculation about the satellite service’s role in bypassing authoritarian censorship.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief made the remark in response to a post by US broadcaster Mark Levin, who claimed Musk could “put the final nail in the coffin of the Iranian regime” by enabling free internet access to the Iranian people—suggesting it could aid in organising a “coup.”

Musk replied succinctly: “The beams are on.”

While no official confirmation has followed, the implication is clear: Starlink satellites may be delivering internet coverage to Iranian territory, a move that would intensify tensions between Musk and Tehran and could have wider geopolitical ramifications.
