**Gold prices have fallen below $4,000 per troy ounce for the first time since July 2026, as surging energy costs and expectations of higher interest rates weigh on the precious metal despite escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.**

Spot gold has declined approximately **15% from its August peak of $4,659.06 an ounce**, putting the metal on course for its largest weekly loss in more than four months.

The decline comes as investors reassess the outlook for inflation following another sharp increase in global oil prices.

**Brent crude has surged above $116 a barrel to a five-month high**, driven by renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure and fears of further disruption to Middle Eastern energy supplies.

Higher oil prices are increasing concerns that inflation could remain elevated for longer, potentially forcing central banks to maintain restrictive monetary policies or introduce additional interest rate increases.

**Gold traditionally faces pressure when interest rate expectations and inflation-adjusted bond yields rise**, because the metal does not pay interest or generate income.

Higher returns available from government bonds and other interest-bearing assets can therefore make holding gold less attractive.

The decline is particularly notable given the continuing geopolitical uncertainty, which would ordinarily provide support for safe-haven assets.

However, **concerns over persistent inflation and the prospect of higher borrowing costs are currently outweighing demand for gold as a defensive investment**.

The latest sell-off also follows a period of substantial gains in precious metals, leaving prices vulnerable to profit-taking as investors adjust their expectations for monetary policy.

**For investors, gold’s fall below $4,000 represents a significant reversal from August’s record levels**, highlighting the influence of bond yields, interest rate expectations and broader market positioning.

Attention will now turn to upcoming central bank decisions, movements in US Treasury yields and developments in the Middle East, which could determine whether gold stabilises or faces further selling pressure.
