# Gas prices spike due to concerns over a potential sabotage-induced leak on subsea pipeline

UK gas prices experienced a sharp rise after Finland’s government suspected that a leak in an underwater pipeline resulted from “external interference”.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto announced that along with the pipeline, a communications cable suffered damage. He emphasized that the authorities have been rigorously investigating the damage to the underwater systems since Sunday.

Niinisto believes the damage probably stemmed from “external interference” and has liaised with NATO regarding the situation.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the leak seemed to be inconsistent with regular activities.

The gas pipeline, which began leaking during the weekend, connects Finland and Estonia, spanning the Bay of Finland.

After reports from Swedish Radio, Finnish outlets Iltalehti and the state-run Yle suggested the leak might not have been accidental, UK gas prices surged by up to 14.8%, reaching 125.4p per therm.
