[Fulcrum Metals plc (AIM: FMET)](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/fulcrum-metals--fmet/pilot-plant-deployment-agreement-signed-/9610081) has taken a significant step towards commercialising its mine waste recovery strategy after signing an agreement to deploy a pilot processing plant at its Teck-Hughes project in Ontario, Canada.

The pilot facility will utilise proprietary cyanide-free leaching technology developed by Extrakt Process Solutions, providing a potentially environmentally friendly alternative to traditional precious metals extraction methods. The project is being supported by engineering giant Bechtel through its long-term alliance with Extrakt.

Designed to process up to 2.4 tonnes of material per day, the pilot plant will initially focus on material from Fulcrum’s Teck-Hughes project while also providing the flexibility to evaluate additional mine waste opportunities across the company’s portfolio and from third parties.

The programme marks the transition from laboratory-scale testing to pilot-scale operations and is intended to generate the operational, metallurgical and engineering data required to support future commercial development.

A key feature of the arrangement is its capital-light structure. Under the agreement, Test Design Implement Solutions (TDI) will supply, install, commission and operate the pilot facility while retaining ownership of the equipment. This enables Fulcrum to access specialist technology and expertise without the need for significant upfront capital expenditure on infrastructure.

Beyond Teck-Hughes, Fulcrum sees a substantial long-term opportunity through its exclusive rights to deploy Extrakt’s cyanide-free technology across historic gold mine waste sites in the Timmins and Kirkland Lake mining districts of Ontario. These prolific mining regions have produced more than 110 million ounces of gold and are estimated to contain over 70 legacy mine waste sites that could potentially be reprocessed using modern recovery techniques.

Chief Executive Ryan Mee described the agreement as a major milestone that creates a pathway towards commercialising Teck-Hughes while establishing a scalable platform capable of supporting future mine waste recovery projects.

The company believes the combination of metal recovery and environmental remediation offers a compelling ESG proposition, allowing historic mine waste to be reprocessed while potentially reducing environmental liabilities associated with legacy mining operations.

Initial pilot operations are expected to involve approximately 12 processing batches over a four-week period. Results from the programme will be used to optimise recovery rates, validate process performance and assess future commercial development options.

Fulcrum believes the platform could ultimately support a broader mine waste recovery business across North America, including future partnerships, acquisitions and toll-processing opportunities, creating a scalable model for extracting value from previously overlooked mining assets.
