London stocks gave back early gains on Monday, with weakness in gold miners, AstraZeneca and soft UK construction data weighing on sentiment.

The FTSE 100 closed down 27.26 points, or 0.3%, at 10,651.77. The FTSE 250 fell 34.58 points, or 0.2%, to 23,504.22, while the AIM All-Share rose 2.65 points, or 0.3%, to 778.74.

Investor sentiment was dented by further signs of weakness in the UK construction sector. The S&P Global UK construction purchasing managers’ index edged up to 38.4 in June from 38.2 in May, but remained well below the 50-point level that separates growth from contraction.

Across Europe, the CAC 40 in Paris closed 0.3% lower, while Frankfurt’s DAX 40 gained 0.2%.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.1% in afternoon trade, while the S&P 500 rose 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.2%, as US markets reopened after Friday’s Independence Day holiday.

In currency markets, the euro weakened to USD1.1417 from USD1.1440 on Friday. The dollar strengthened against the yen to JPY162.34 from JPY161.30. Sterling traded at USD1.3354, little changed from USD1.3351 on Friday, while the pound firmed against the euro to EUR1.1696 from EUR1.1672.

US Treasury yields moved higher, with the 10-year yield trading at 4.49% and the 30-year yield at 5.00%.

Brent crude for September delivery rose to USD72.13 a barrel from USD71.76 on Friday, while gold slipped to USD4,148.94 an ounce from USD4,167.57.

In London, AstraZeneca fell 2.5%, weighing heavily on the FTSE 100. Sector peer GSK also declined, down 1.6%.

A softer gold price pressured precious metals names, with Fresnillo down 2.4% and Endeavour Mining falling 2.5%.

On the FTSE 250, easyJet jumped 9.3% after confirming it had reached an agreement in principle over a possible takeover by US private equity firm Castlelake.

The Luton-based budget airline said Castlelake’s fifth proposal valued the company at 690p per share. The board said it was minded to recommend the offer, provided a firm bid is made by the 3 August deadline.

ITV slipped 0.1% after announcing plans to return £950 million to shareholders following the agreed sale of its Media & Entertainment business to Sky, a wholly owned subsidiary of Comcast, for up to £1.6 billion.

Under the deal, ITV will receive £1.2 billion in cash, Sky’s Love Productions business valued at £200 million, and up to a further £200 million in cash linked to 2027 advertising performance and payable in the second half of 2028.

The biggest FTSE 100 risers were Relx, St James’s Place, BAE Systems, London Stock Exchange Group and IG Group.

The biggest fallers were Compass Group, Associated British Foods, Coca-Cola HBC, Halma and Metlen Energy & Metals.

Tuesday’s global economic calendar includes trade figures from the US and Canada, Halifax house price data in the UK and German industrial production figures.

On the UK corporate calendar, Shell is due to release a trading statement, while Victrex will report third-quarter results.
