[EnergyPathways plc (AIM: EPP)](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/energypathways-plc--epp/accelerated-hydrogen-graphite-production-facility/9823605) is accelerating plans to develop a low-carbon hydrogen and graphite production facility at Barrow-in-Furness, targeting first revenues by 2029, with the potential for an earlier start-up as engineering and commercial arrangements progress.

The proposed facility forms part of the company’s integrated **MESH energy project**, which combines long-duration energy storage, natural gas and hydrogen storage, and the production of hydrogen, graphite and ammonia.

EnergyPathways said the hydrogen and graphite development could proceed independently of government commercial subsidies, potentially allowing a faster route to market.

The company is working with technology partners **Hazer Group, alongside KBR, and Hycamite TCD Technologies** to advance engineering designs and evaluate production technologies.

The facility would use methane-splitting technology to separate natural gas into low-carbon hydrogen and solid graphitic carbon, capturing the carbon as a potentially saleable product rather than releasing it directly as carbon dioxide.

**Graphite has been identified as a critical mineral by the UK Government**, reflecting its importance to battery manufacturing, industrial production and energy security.

The UK currently relies entirely on imported graphite, creating an opportunity for domestic production as industries seek more secure supply chains.

EnergyPathways plans to develop its graphite business in two phases, initially targeting established industrial markets including **tyre manufacturing, metallurgy, concrete and asphalt production**.

The second phase would focus on producing higher-grade graphite for more valuable applications, potentially including electric vehicle batteries and advanced technologies.

**A site capable of supporting production of 20,000 tonnes annually has been identified in Barrow**, with negotiations underway regarding its acquisition or lease and scope for future expansion.

Existing gas and electricity infrastructure could help accelerate development, while discussions are progressing over securing a prioritised grid connection.

The company said the project requires a relatively limited regulatory process and does not depend on government commercial support, although it may pursue grants to support research into higher-value graphite products.

**Chief Executive Ben Clube** said the facility could provide EnergyPathways with an early revenue stream and potentially attractive EBITDA margins, helping support the wider MESH development.

He confirmed that the company is progressing discussions with prospective customers over offtake agreements, alongside engagement with strategic investors and private capital providers to finance construction.

EnergyPathways believes the combination of hydrogen production and graphite sales could create a commercially viable business independent of the project’s other energy storage activities.

However, **the 2029 revenue target remains dependent on securing land, completing engineering, arranging funding and finalising commercial agreements**, with no binding offtake or financing arrangements announced.

**For investors, the accelerated development strategy offers a potential route to earlier cash generation from MESH**, while positioning EnergyPathways to participate in the UK’s emerging domestic graphite supply chain.

Attention will now turn to land acquisition, technology selection, customer agreements and funding commitments as the company works towards commercialising the Barrow facility.
