Located in the Irish Sea with infrastructure linked into Barrow-in-Furness, the project combines compressed air energy storage with natural gas and hydrogen storage using large-scale subsea storage systems.\n\nThe UK Government has designated MESH a project of “national significance” due to its potential contribution to energy security and lower long-term energy costs.\n\nAlongside storage capabilities, the project also has the potential to produce synthetic graphite for use across civil nuclear, defence and battery applications, aligning with the UK’s wider critical minerals strategy.\n\nMillwood Hargrave brings more than four decades of experience spanning subsurface technology, industrial innovation and energy systems.\n\nHe founded subsurface software company Ikon Science, which was acquired by Constellation Software in 2025.\n\nHe currently serves as a visiting professor in Earth Sciences at University of Oxford and as a senior associate at Oxford Net Zero.\n\nHis experience includes hydrocarbon exploration, carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, hydrogen, greenhouse gas removal and nuclear waste disposal, alongside advisory work for governments and regulators.\n\nChief executive Ben Clube said the appointment would support the company as it broadens the strategic relevance of MESH across long-duration energy storage, hydrogen and graphite-linked industrial supply chains.\n\nMillwood Hargrave said MESH has the potential to become a strategically important UK infrastructure project at the intersection of energy security, industrial decarbonisation and critical minerals development."}
