British Gas’s owner has reopened Britain’s largest gas storage site following a five-year halt. This was done in an effort to increase supplies before winter.
After engineering upgrades, Centrica announced that it has made the first injections at Rough after this morning. This winter, the site is operating at 20% of its former capacity.
Despite the partial opening, it is still the largest UK gas storage site and adds 50% to its gas reserves.
This move comes as the UK prepares for a difficult winter following Russia’s cut of gas supplies to Europe. It raises the risk of blackouts and shortages.
Chris O’Shea is the chief executive officer of Centrica. He stated that while rough is not an all-purpose solution for energy security it was a crucial part of a series of steps that can be taken to help the UK in winter.
