UK Holds Back from Military Involvement Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Tensions
Britain currently has no plans to defend Israel as Iran responds to overnight Israeli strikes on its nuclear and military facilities, according to defence sources.
The UK did not participate in the attacks on Tehran and is not providing support to intercept any potential Iranian retaliation, unlike during previous escalations. However, officials noted that the situation remains fluid and is subject to change.
In October 2024, when Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel, the UK deployed two fighter jets and an air-to-air refuelling tanker to help deter further escalation. While the aircraft were mobilised, they did not engage any targets.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has called for restraint and a renewed commitment to diplomacy. Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the current escalation as a “very dangerous moment.”
