Breaking: Nicola Sturgeon to resign as Scottish first minister

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, is set to resign from her position after over eight years in the role.

The announcement is expected to be made at a news conference in Edinburgh, but it is not clear when she will officially leave office. Sturgeon became the first minister in November 2014, succeeding Alex Salmond after the independence referendum. She is the longest-serving first minister in the country’s history.
