Breaking News: Visa card network across the UK, EU crashes and sparks payment chaos

Card giant confirms it is suffering an outage and is investigating the cause

Visa’s payment network has crashed across the UK and Europe, sparking chaos as transactions are failing or being denied.

The company confirmed that it is suffering an outage and it is investigating the cause.

The scale of the outage remains unclear, although Visa customers across Europe have taken to Twitter to say that payments are not being accepted in shops and petrol stations.

In a statement, Visa said: “Visa is currently experiencing a service disruption. This incident is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed.

“We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.”

Paymentsense, which provides merchant services to more than 60,000 independent businesses across the UK and Ireland, tweeted: “Visa has advised us that they are having issues with its authorisation service since 14:36pm which may cause intermittent authorisation call failures & time outs.”

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said: “We are unable to accept Visa card payments across Europe currently. No retailers are able to accept Visa cards.”
