In this episode, James Gilbertson Amaroq VP Exploration provides a site tour and CEO Eldur Olafsson provides strategic commentary on the acquisition rationale, full-cycle mining approach, and long-term vision for responsible resource development in Greenland.
In West Greenland, the Black Angel mine operated from 1973 to 1990 as one of the world’s most productive zinc operations, processing 450,000 tonnes annually at exceptional grades of 12.6% zinc. When metal prices shifted in 1990, the mine closed—not due to resource depletion, but economics.
Thirty-five years later, Amaroq has acquired the asset, becoming Greenland’s largest mineral licence holder in the process.
“Black Angel” provides a detailed site visit and strategic overview of Amaroq’s June 2025 acquisition. Join James Gilbertson, VP of Exploration, as he walks through the existing infrastructure, explains the geological potential, and outlines the technical work ahead to evaluate this high-grade zinc resource.
This episode examines what makes Black Angel strategically significant: preserved infrastructure, historical drill data, a 4.4 million tonne resource at 8.2% zinc, and the nearby Kangerluarsuk exploration area showing surface grades up to 41.1% zinc, just 12km away. Recent analysis of the historical core samples has also identified germanium and gallium mineralisation, critical minerals for semiconductor and defence applications, adding further strategic dimension to the asset.
