Aldi has declared its “best Christmas ever” after Britain’s fourth-largest grocery retailer reported sales exceeding £1.6 billion in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve. This achievement was partly driven by customers opting for its premium product range.
The supermarket chain revealed that total sales during the critical holiday period rose 3.4% compared to the previous year, bolstered by a 12% increase in Specially Selected private-label items sales.
While the German-owned retailer’s annual sales growth was modest compared to the 8% increase seen during Christmas 2023, it still marked a consecutive record year for sales in this period.
The final three months of the year, often referred to as the “golden quarter” in the retail sector, see households indulging in significant spending on gifts and groceries. Aldi announced that Monday, December 23, 2024, marked its busiest trading day ever, attracting 3 million customers. This surpassed its previous peak, which occurred on Friday, December 22, the year before.
This milestone followed similar success from its German-owned competitor, Lidl, which also reported record Christmas sales exceeding £1 billion.
Lidl’s sales grew by 7% during the period, despite expanding its floor space by 3%. Both German supermarket chains have influenced British consumer behavior by prioritizing lower prices over a wide variety of choices, thereby reshaping spending habits.
