As they stick themselves to the asphalt, activists vow to ignore harsher penalties for violating court injunctions.
Just Stop Oil activists spray orange paint on Aston Martin showrooms in disruption. This was their 16th consecutive day.
At 11 a.m. on Sunday, the eco-campaigners met in Park Lane in central London. Some were glued to the asphalt or locking themselves together.
According to the group, it will ignore harsh new penalties in the Public Order Bill that was due to be passed by Parliament on Tuesday.
Suella Braverman (Home Secretary) proposed making it a crime for people to carry glue with the intent to stick themselves to each other or highways. They could also face six months imprisonment.
In an effort to streamline the process, she will also be able to apply for court orders to stop protests in cases where it is in the public interest. This was previously done by transport agencies.
She said, “I won’t give in to the protestors trying to hold the British people to ransom.” It is unjust and selfish to prevent emergency services from reaching people who are most in need of them.
Since October 1, more than 350 Just Stop Oil protestors have been arrested in London. They are calling on the Government to stop all new oil and gas licences and consents.
Just Stop Oil released a statement on Sunday stating that they will not be intimidated or stopped by injunctions to silence peaceful people. These are irrelevant when they are used against mass starvation and slaughter, as well as the loss of rights, freedoms, and communities. The Home Secretary is showing that politics is broken.
This action follows just days after Just Stop Oil protesters threw tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery, and spray paint over the rotating New Scotland Yard sign.
According to the campaign group, it will also protest outside Downing Street each day in October.
Mel Carrington of Just Stop Oil told The Telegraph that “it just shows the Government has lost it all; that they are on their back foot.”
It is absurd that they would criminalize peaceful people who have a reasonable demand, which is to not do anything that will lead to mass starvation and slaughter. The idea that we are a threat to law order and order is absurd.
“We are unaffected, we will continue, we won’t be stopped by these threats. We will not be intimidated or stopped by any changes to the law and we will continue to do so.
Ms Braverman said that she felt she was out of her depth, at loss, and is yelling at her. I feel that people will not be deterred by this. They will continue because the alternative is so horrible and our demand very reasonable.
“I have no doubt they will do it if the power is still with them.” This is clearly their intention. We have already witnessed the tightening of laws regarding protests against peaceful protestors.
