US equities moved lower after Donald Trump said there was “no going back” on his intention to take control of Greenland.
The benchmark S&P 500 was down 1.2pc by midday in New York, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell nearly 1.4pc. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower by about 1pc.
Danni Hewson, an analyst at AJ Bell, said: “There’s no doubt that the timing of yesterday’s US public holiday cushioned global markets from the worst of investor nerves as tensions escalated between European leaders and Donald Trump.
“Comments from the US president that there is ‘no going back’ on Greenland have pushed US indices sharply lower today, as markets try to judge whether this is another bout of strategic brinkmanship or a more serious challenge to relations with a NATO ally.”
