FTSE expected to open lower, US markets close in the red

The FTSE 100 is poised to start lower, influenced by declines in Asian markets and mixed signals from Chinese trade data, while US markets surrendered initial gains to end in negative territory.

Spread betting firms anticipate a decrease of about 30 points for London’s main index, following its rise of 25.54 points, or 0.3%, to close at 7,515.38 on Wednesday.

China showcased unexpectedly robust export growth on Thursday, halting six months of decline. However, a surprising drop in imports suggests ongoing weakness in demand within the region’s biggest economy.

“Asia’s markets have faced challenges, particularly with the recent Chinese trade figures indicating a still-struggling economy. Moody’s downgrade of China’s credit outlook, along with lower ratings for banks and smaller companies, is likely to impact the European markets at the open today, following Asian market weaknesses,” commented Michael Hewson, an analyst at CMC Markets.

In the US, the major indices closed lower: the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.2%, the S&P 500 by 0.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite by 0.6%.

Turning to London, the early attention will be on updates from companies like Balfour Beatty, DS Smith, Watches of Switzerland, and Frasers.
