80 Mile Begins Drilling Towards Major Targets at Disko-Nuussuaq Project
80 Mile PLC (AIM: 80M) has confirmed that drilling is now underway at its Disko-Nuussuaq nickel-copper-cobalt-PGE project in West Greenland.
The company said its drill rigs have been securely cemented at the first locations and have successfully completed pressure testing.
Drilling is now progressing towards the top of the targeted zones, with each hole planned to reach a maximum depth of 1,000 metres, subject to ongoing geological review and rig-site assessment.
The Disko-Nuussuaq project is located on Greenland’s southwest coast and is being explored for magmatic massive sulphide mineralisation containing nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metals.
To date, 80 Mile has identified seven significant magmatic massive sulphide targets across the licence area.
The largest target is reported to measure approximately 5.9 kilometres long by 1.1 kilometres wide.
The project has also previously produced a 28-tonne boulder of massive sulphide material that assayed 6.9% nickel, 3.7% copper, 0.6% cobalt and 2 grams per tonne of platinum group metals.
The boulder is now displayed at the Geological Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
80 Mile has also carried out surface sampling across the project, with selected samples returning nickel grades ranging from 4.6% to 9.3% and copper grades of between 1.5% and 2.8%.
The company said fresh outcrop samples displayed characteristics that it believes are consistent with large-scale nickel-copper-cobalt-PGE sulphide segregation.
Coarse-grained, interlocking metal sulphide crystals were also observed in hand specimens, with average crystal sizes exceeding 15 centimetres.
The Disko-Nuussuaq project comprises six mineral exploration licences covering approximately 3,015 square kilometres across Disko Island and the Nuussuaq Peninsula in central West Greenland.
The project lies within the West Greenland Flood Basalt Province, which has historically been compared geologically with the Siberian Flood Basalts associated with the Norilsk-Talnakh mining district in Russia.
That geological analogy has formed an important part of the exploration model used at Disko.
80 Mile maintains a logistics base in Ilulissat and operates a modular exploration camp at Qullissat on Disko Island capable of supporting up to 40 personnel.
With drilling now underway, the current programme is designed to test whether the substantial geophysical targets identified at Disko are associated with significant subsurface magmatic sulphide mineralisation.
