Around 125 jobs will be cut at the [Lindsey oil refinery in north Lincolnshire](https://www.share-talk.com/lindsey-oil-refinery-to-close-after-collapse-of-owner-prax-group-625-jobs-lost/) after the collapse of its parent company, Prax Group, according to the insolvency firm managing the site.

The Unite union said there are at least two bids to buy and run the refinery as a going concern with the full workforce. Following the cuts, 255 employees are expected to remain, according to the Insolvency Service, as reported by Sky.

“We understand that this a very difficult time for all those affected by this decision, and the Insolvency Service will fully support employees subject to redundancy via the redundancy payments service.

The site remains safe, and the official receiver continues to prioritise health and safety at the site alongside the ongoing process to secure the sale of the refinery.

The conduct of the company and its directors, following the liquidation of Prax Oil Refinery, remains the subject of an ongoing Insolvency Service investigation.”

Unite has blamed the government for allowing redundancies at the Lindsey oil refinery, arguing that it could step in to keep the site operational. The union warned that beyond the 125 direct job losses, another 500 contract roles and potentially thousands of supply chain jobs depend on the refinery.

According to Unite, insolvency firm FTI’s preferred bidder plans to mothball the site and convert it into an oil storage terminal. While this would help satisfy creditors, the union said it would destroy jobs, damage the regional economy, and weaken the UK’s fuel security.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The government has been tin eared to the plight of workers at the second oil refinery facing closure in less than a year. This makes a mockery of government promises to protect workers and its plan for net zero.

The government had promised to ensure that job focused bids would be the priority at Lindsey, yet prior to bids even being considered, they are already issuing redundancy notices.”

Unite said the refinery’s main creditors, HMRC and oil giant Glencore, could accept a longer but less damaging process that keeps the site running as a refinery, provided the government offers support.

It warned that shutting the plant would undermine UK energy security. The Lindsey refinery previously supplied a quarter of the country’s diesel, and without it the UK will rely more heavily on imports. Much of this diesel comes from Turkey and India and is produced using Russian crude, leaving consumers more exposed to price rises at the pump.
